The Far-Reaching Understanding of Tiziano Terzani
To the Editor:
Many thanks to Swans Commentary of September 8 for making available in English Tiziano Terzani's Letters Against the War. The reader can differ with Terzani's always generous pacifism, distrust of modern life, and taste for meditation on the mountain. But the book amazes because it was written in 2001 immediately after 9/11, and Terzani foretold what some of us haven't yet learnt about what would happen in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Pakistan. He could do this because he went to see the people that our governments and media had already begun to demonize. He talked to the "other," the "enemy." He gave these people a face and a name. The Taliban turned out to be anything but a monolith. The stoic and determined ordinary people he met on the streets of Pakistan's tribal areas made clear what our experts are only now beginning to understand with dismay. Terzani's message was simple, "If we want to understand the world we live in, we must see it whole, not just from our own point of view."
