Poetry
(Swans - August 11, 2008)
I grew up where orange blossoms
scented the spring air.
Back then, in Southern California,
too few knew luck was rare.
We had mountains and deserts.
We had oceans, lakes and streams.
We seemed to have it all.
Our lives were like dreams.
Then exponential growth
invaded our land.
We allowed buildings and asphalt
to bury the soil and sand.
Dire predictions went unheeded.
We were in complete denial.
With so much to lose
we just continued to defile.
Now, as fate would have it,
the burden falls on us
to reverse the downward spiral
and repair the ugly mess.
Protect what you still have,
and then renew everything,
so that we might again enjoy
orange blossoms in spring.
