On The Anniversary Of Swans
(for gilles and jan)

by Gerard Donnelly Smith

Poetry

(Swans - May 8, 2006)
two birds upon the left bank nesting;
feathered with words, the flock replies:
voices raised above the cresting,
progressively set against the tide.

two birds at the keyboard preening
issues upon issues, the clarion call:
voices joined as one resisting
those who build divisive walls.

two birds at the egg-heads pecking,
fragile shells filled with feathery lies:
voices clear above their clamoring,
asking for answers that other's deny.

two birds right will never migrate,
nor from this flight plan ever fall:
voices from the desk still dictate,
liberty for one and all.
